“I commend the AGM for adopting a new constitution with the proviso that it will be ratified in the next meeting,” said Spadino.
“This was agreed by the attendees who voted to give everyone time to read the constitution. Thus, the community is encouraged to get a copy and then come to ratify the constitution at our next meeting.
“The voice of the community has been heard in combating crime. I wish for the community to become more proactive in fighting crime in Malvern and to help us to build a good partnership with the SAPS,” said Spadino.
Liesel Hornby, who shares the role of leading the victim support portfolio with Zinhle Nxumalo, said she is confident that those voted in are the right people for the job.
She added that in her role as support officer she looks forward to seeing good synergy between men, women and children in the community.
“We need to make it safer for women to speak openly about abuse and rape so that we can teach each other not to be afraid,” she said.
Nepeti Nicanor, a community member who attended the meeting expressed delight in what she described as the community’s commitment towards creating a safe and cohesive community.
“The most important outcome of the AGM is that we are now a legitimate structure, with a constitution and an elected leadership for our sector.
“This allows us to engage the police and other stakeholders formally as accorded in the law. This will also facilitate the swift response to our concerns in the community,” said Nicanor.
The forum will hold its next meeting at Malvern Lights on September 14.
