Birds under attack at Horwood’s Farm

“Although the specifics are unknown, I believe the snares were used by people who were hungry.”

Edenvale SPCA appealed to the community to report sightings of snares in Horwood’s Farm.

Inspector Jade Nel, of the SPCA, said in recent weeks two snares were taken from the park near a feeding station for feral cats.

“From the information we received the snares were being used to catch the hadeda ibis at the park.

“It appears that the perpetrators were using the cat food to attract the birds.”

To Nel’s knowledge, this was the first report of snares at Horwood’s Farm.

“Although the specifics are unknown, I believe the snares were used by people who were hungry,” said Nel.

“However, it is possible the birds were being hunted for other reasons.”

She said the matter was escalated to authorities from the South African nature conservation to be investigated further.

Report any sightings of snares at the park or elsewhere in Edenvale to 011 974 9268.

Nel said the information will be passed on to the nature conservation.
