Would-be thief gets seven years in jail

Cleveland police welcome successful sentencing of would-be thief.

Cleveland SAPS welcomed the successful conviction of Xolani Mdlalose (36) by the the Joburg Regional Court after he was found guilty on August 29 of house burglary.

Mdlalose was given seven years behind bars in addition to being declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The court heard that Mdlalose broke into a house in Malvern on March 15 this year, and was subsequently attacked by a mob when he attempted to flee, allegedly with undisclosed stolen items.

“Police found a group of people assaulting the suspect but managed to free him, and arrested him for possession of stolen property.

“In court he was, however, convicted for house burglary.

“The management of Cleveland SAPS welcomes the conviction and congratulates the investigating officer on good investigative work.

“Cleveland SAPS will always serve the community with pride. We urge the community not to assault suspects when carrying out a citizen’s arrest, but to contact the police as soon as possible,” said Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan.
