Lending a hand to single parents

“There will be no criticism or judgement. The group will allow single parents to talk about topics others may be dealing with.”

Edenvale resident Boitumelo Modiroa encouraged single parents to join Rebabaletswe Support Group.

The group, formed in 2016, was initially for single mothers but in recent months Boitumelo decided to open the group to all single parents.

Boitumelo explained, from her own experience, that raising a child by oneself can be difficult and stressful at times.

The name of the group stems from the Setswana word Rebabaletswe which means we are blessed or we have a second chance.

“In certain instances there is a lack of support from your family, from your ex-partner or any financial assistance.

“Besides this, some people judge single parents for the situation they find themselves in.”

Boitumelo said the group will be a safe place for community members.

“I want to show people that they are not alone, that other people are going through similar circumstances and that there is a support structure for them.”

Another objective of the group is to try to break the cycle of divorces in a family.

Boitumelo said when children have divorced parents they might see it as normal.

“As divorced parents, we have to think about our children first and be good role models to them.

“The child comes first and we come second.”
