Bedfordview Edenvale News has taken third place in the best back page category at the prestigious AVBOB Forum of Community Journalists NPC (FCJ) Excellence Awards.

The annual awards attracted more than 600 entries this year, with community newspapers showcasing their work across 17 categories.

The strongest competition was recorded in several key categories, including front pages with 76 entries; back pages with 49 entries; free newspaper of the year with 45 entries; hard news/investigative reporting with 79 entries; and compelling human interest reportage with 64 entries.

Dr André Gouws of Akademia oversaw the adjudication process.

“This year’s competition reflects a healthy and evolving community newspaper sector,” said Gouws.

“The judging panel congratulates all entrants and hopes that the feedback they will receive will encourage even greater excellence in the years ahead.”

The awards are supported by AVBOB’s financial investment in the FCJ and the community media industry, as well as ongoing support from Caxton Local Media, Novus Community Media and new partner Stellenbosch University.

The support enables the FCJ to strengthen its offering and provide further development opportunities for community journalists.

Winners were announced at a gala prize-giving dinner at The Capital Menlyn Maine in Pretoria on August 21.

The FCJ also hosted its national seminar ahead of the awards ceremony, focusing on the role of community journalists in the upcoming municipal elections.
