Motorists are urged to be alert when traveling on Modderfontein Road near the N3 on and off-ramps.

This follows reports of smash-and-grab incidents in the area.

The following tips from the SAPS can prevent smash-and-grab crimes:

1. Valuable items such as laptops and cameras should be put in the boot of your car.
2. Always close your windows when approaching an intersection.
3. Avoid conversations with strangers standing outside your vehicle.
4. Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road and at traffic lights.
5. Keep car doors locked at all times.
6. Do not use a cellular phone unless you have a hands-free kit.
7. If something seems suspicious drive away.
8. When possible, vary the route you travel to work and back.
