Bedfordview High School (BHS) pass rate average has dropped by 4% from last year.
The school now looks to making sure it rises in 2020.
BHS principal Mpho Tshisudi said the pass rate average for the class of 2019 is at 77%, dropping from 81% in 2018.
“The reason for the drop is our language subjects. We had an amazing English teacher who retired and we begged him to stay. It was a loss. We had to then employ first time teachers and took the compromise,” said Tshisudi.
He said they have hired better English and Afrikaans teachers to ensure this problem does not persist.
“I did not see the pass rate dropping. We were looking to a 91% pass rate this year.
“Despite this, I am happy for the effort put forth by our learners,” said Tshisudi.
Tshisudi added he hopes to have more support for matriculants this year.
“We have had minimal support by parents. I believe it could be a school fees issue. Some parents may not want to face the music and may stay away entirely. It is a challenge for us. I want parents to support their children no matter the circumstances,” said Tshisudi.
He added he appreciated all the support the school has received from the Department of Education.
BHS governing body chairperson James Kabe said as governors they work hand in hand with the principal to ensure that he is supported.
“We will prioritise and ensure that we deliver a push for better results this year, together with the principal,” said Kabe.
He said they do celebrate along with the learners who have passed,
“We also love and support the ones who have not passed. We want them to know failure is not final,” said Kabe.
