21st century playground for SAHETI Playschool

An ambitious project aimed at the 21st-century child.

When SAHETI Playschool’s playground was revamped recently, the guiding principle was that children should engage with a 21st century curriculum both inside and outside the classroom.

Outside play is, after all, an extension of classroom learning. The school collaborated with stakeholders, specialists in the field, as well as professionals in early childhood development and ultimately decided to make use of the Hags and Stilum Playground Equipment ranges from Sweden.

‘Critical to a 21st-century curriculum is creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Each piece of age-appropriate equipment that was installed allows for open-ended imaginative play, coupled with fun and gross motor input’ explained the vice-principal of SAHETI’s Playschool and Pre-Primary School, Andy Haefner.

There is no prescribed use for any of the equipment (unlike in the past) and children are free to explore and engage as they wish. ‘Because children learn with their whole bodies, each piece of apparatus was carefully chosen to target specific muscle groups during gross motor play. Core strength and shoulder girdle development are both critical areas that require development in the young child’s body before formal learning can take place’ she added.
