Ekurhuleni urges ECD centres to comply with municipal regulations
Early childhood development (ECD) practitioners were reminded of the importance of operating compliant facilities as the City of Ekurhuleni highlighted the role these centres play in shaping the future of young children.
Early childhood development (ECD) centres across Ekurhuleni have been urged to comply with municipal regulations and bylaws to ensure safe and supportive learning environments for children.
The call was made by Executive Mayor Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza during the ECD Practitioners Indaba held at the Germiston Civic Centre, where practitioners gathered to discuss challenges affecting the sector and share best practices.
Addressing attendees, Xhakaza acknowledged the important role ECD practitioners play in preparing children for the future, describing early childhood development as a critical building block for a thriving society.

He encouraged centre owners and principals to ensure their facilities comply with the city’s requirements, stressing that quality early learning environments contribute significantly to children’s development and wellbeing.
The indaba also focused on equipping practitioners with practical skills to support learners. Speech therapy specialists addressed delegates on the early identification of speech and language difficulties, providing guidance on how practitioners can recognise challenges and facilitate early intervention.
MMC for Metro Operations and Maintenance Alderman Nomadlozi Nkosi used the platform to remind practitioners planning to expand existing facilities or construct new centres to follow the necessary municipal processes.
Nkosi advised ECD operators to consult the city’s Planning Department through Customer Care Centres before undertaking any building projects and to secure the required building plan approvals to avoid potential compliance issues.
The City said compliance with planning and safety regulations remains essential in creating environments where children can learn, grow and develop safely.
