Bowlers keep the greens busy

Covid-19, rather than being a negative influence, has played a major role in the club being at the forefront of creating exciting competitions.

In recent weeks, Edenvale Bowling Club and its members have remained active by playing the sport and teaching community members how to play.

The club also congratulated the father and son team, Sean and Anre Waters, for winning the June leg of the Perch Pairs, a monthly competition held at Edenvale Bowling Club.

“The winning team needs to remain on the perch for two consecutive matches to win the jackpot,” explained Raymond Pieters from Edenvale Bowling Club.

The father and son team will have the opportunity to defend their title in July in the next round of the competition.

“It is not an easy feat to stay on top as the competition is fierce and nobody knows until the scoring is done as to who is on the perch,” said Pieters.

On June 11, Mamba Security held its awards day at the club and staff were given a quick lesson on the basics of bowls and the mystery of the bias was explained.

Pieters said those interested were divided into teams and placed under the guidance of four members of the club.

“For approximately two hours, great fun was had by all,” said Pieters.

In light of the surge of the Covid-19 case, a challenge match between the young guns of the club and the more senior players needed to be called off.

“Health and safety had to take priority over the tournament,” explained Pieters.

Similarly, the club had to call off its ‘battle of the sexes’ event, which would have seen women compete against men.

Pieters said all of the events are part of project 72, where the aim is to get 72 bowlers on the greens regularly.

“During these trying times, the club has tried to stay positive and innovative to keep its doors open,” said Pieters.

“We have a loyal, vibrant and enthusiastic membership, who without their continued support, we would not be able to maintain the excellent standard of our club.”

He said Covid-19, rather than being a negative influence, has played a major role in the club being at the forefront of creating exciting competitions.

“Most of these competitions are free and open to members of surrounding clubs.”

Edenvale Bowling Club offers three greens, which are cared for by Billy Morehen, one of the most experienced and widely acknowledged greenkeepers around.

The club also has a hall for hire, which comes with a bar and catering facilities.
