The ins and outs of copy editing

The copy editor's job is to spot elementary spelling, idiom and grammar mistakes, and the deeper aspects of context and correct structuring of an author's work.

Copy editor John Linnegar gave an entertaining and wide insight on the profession of copy editing to members of Writers 2000 at the club’s monthly meeting.

John is a former English teacher who moved over to copy editing 41 years ago.

He told members that the copy editor is an essential link in the business of authorship and publishing your book, be it a novel, textbook or non-fiction publication.

John trains professional editors, indexers and editorial project managers the basics and more advanced profession of copy editing.

He has served as a member of The Professional Editors Guild of South Africa for at least 15 years.

His professional output is copy editing several books.
