Undaunted by the clouds and mist

There are many summer flowers out on the Koppies at the moment.

Most people chose to stay in bed on November 28 and not visit Melville Koppies.

Not surprising since the air was chilly, clouds threatening rain and mist blanketed the Brixton tower.

But for those that did, they were rewarded with cool hiking weather, bright summer flowers and a break in the clouds at the end.

There are many summer flowers out on the Koppies at the moment.

Hikers simply have to climb towards the top of the ridge where the grass was burnt to keep it as grassland.

One couple almost had the whole Koppie to themselves.

In between the green grass, avid outdoor enthusiasts will notice many flowers brightening the green.

One of the flowering plants is the milk bush or Xysmalobium undulatum.

Unlike most flowers, it hides its face from the birds and the bees choosing to face downwards so that its scent entices its favoured pollinators, beetles.

Hikers will have to bend down if they want to see the intricate details of the flower head (umbrel).

Visit Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30.

No need to pre-book. Entry costs R80 for adults and R40 for children.

All income is used to employ a conservation team and for the security of the Koppies, which amounts to R22 000 per month.

Security on the Koppies is provided and visitors can park in a secure parking bay opposite the entrance at

Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
