The tech savvy IT guru said he came to South Africa for work and fell in love with the weather, the wildlife and his wife.

“I’ve stayed here ever since and still love it,” he said.
Mike added that crime was the only thing he didn’t like.

“If it wasn’t for my wife, I think I would have left a long time ago, but she was born in Bedfordview and has stayed here her whole life.

“I’m glad I didn’t leave.”

Mike joined the BCPF in July but said it’s wasn’t the unrest in the country that spurred his move to the forum.

“I’d been meaning to join the CPF for a long time and when I received a message on our street group calling for members, it just made it easy to join,” he said.

Mike said being a member of the BCPF was beneficial to every individual.

“It’s not just about policing. There are other issues in the community that I’m now aware of that I never was before.”

He said he would imagine that his new role in the CPF would involve a load of paperwork.

Mike, who stays in a “rather safe” road closure, said just because the crime in Bedfordview was lower, no one should let their guard down.

“We might be safer here than other areas, but we also need to try and help the areas that are not as fortunate as we are.”

He added there was no perfect age for people to join the CPF.

“It’s not about age but more about the maturity to be socially responsible.”

Mike and his patrolling partner can be seen cruising around Bedfordview two to three times a week.

“My partner is as committed as I am.”

He said his partner believes it’s Mike’s Irish luck that has kept their patrols relatively quiet.

“One night, we came across a tanker on fire on the highway. Other than that, we sometimes encounter the odd drunkard on the roads.”

In his very little spare time, Mike enjoys visiting game and wine farms, neither of which he gets to do as often as he used to.

“I also enjoy reading and studying tech.”

As an avid runner, Mike has also been a familiar face at the Gillooly’s Parkrun, where he volunteers every Saturday.

“I run as often as I can and recently, probably around the same time as I join the CPF, joined Bedfordview Athletics Club,” he said.

Mike and his wife have three children and 17 rescue pets: three dogs and 14 cats.

“My wife feeds three or four feral colonies a few times every week and I play taxi service to some of the areas.”
