Edenvale community join hands for a clean-up

Bags of litter and debris were removed and two stormwater drains were cleared.

To improve their town, Essentially Edenvale community volunteers took up the call to make a difference.

In recent weeks the volunteers, organised by an Environmental portfolio committee member of Ward 18, Lisa Atkins, cleaned several areas in town by removing debris and litter and did improvements.

Some of the waste and debris from last month’s clean-up that was taken to the solid waste depot in Sebenza.

The non-political group hopes to tackle all overgrown and neglected public spaces and improve them, thereby assisting the municipality.

Previously, Atkins told Bedfordview and Edenvale News that throu-gh the clean-ups, she hopes residents will take ownership of their town.

On January 21, volunteers, members of the Edenvale Panthers Rugby Club and representatives from the Taxi Associations Soccer League united to improve a portion of land near the Edenvale Sports Grounds.

They focused on Fifth Street, which runs parallel to the sports grounds.

Atkins said many bags of rubbish were removed and two stormwater drains were cleared.

She said Mamba Strike Force assisted them in removing the bags of collected debris from the island on 17th Avenue.

At the start of this month, the group held another clean-up at the intersection of Edendale and Main roads. Atkins described it as a massive success and thanked the participants for their assistance.

She said four trailers filled with blag bags were removed and taken to the solid waste depot in Sebenza.

She said the group plans to return to the area.

Atkins said there are plans to paint the taxi rank, replace the broken bins and plant cacti and succulents on the nearby rock island.
