Elspark’s former principal, Wynand Frederick Gericke, was all that and more.

The school said they were honoured to have been under his leadership because he was an education giant.

Gericke was born on August 15, 1957, the eldest of three children.

He matriculated from Rustenburg High School in 1974 aged 17.

Even at a young age, he always showed leadership qualities. He joined the army and completed his training in Walvis Bay in 1975.

As he was passionate about education he decided on education as a career. He studied at the Goudstad College of Education and graduated in 1980. While at Goustad, he served on the student council.

Gericke’s first position was at Baanbreker Primary School in 1981. In 1993, he accepted the position of deputy principal at Elspark Primary School.

He served and made deep strides in this position, being promoted to principal in 2010.

After 30 years at Elspark Primary School, Gericke retired at the end of last year, aged 65.

School staff said he served the school, community, parents, and children with his eyes always fixed on the Lord.

As the leader of the school, he created unity, started tempo education, grew the school to great heights, and always put academics first.

“The technology side flourished under his banner and he was not afraid of innovation. Work ethics, accountability, and responsibility weigh heavily in his books.

“He was always resourceful and an advocate of good school discipline and a positive learning environment.

“Faith, hope, and love were part of his leadership style,” said Judith van Zyl, a school secretary.

Van Zyl said the school is grateful to have crossed paths with him.

“We are all grass seeds in the wind, as sung by Dozi, but we are grateful that Mr Gericke’s seed germinated and grew here at Elspark. May you be well wherever the wind blows you, and may you always remember Elspark.

“Primary School as a school with abundance and great gratitude toward you,” said Judith.
