Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum needs nominations for committee

The Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum was established and tasked to implement a strategy to co-ordinate a five-year implementation plan, with clear deliverables, targets and time frames.

Ending homelessness requires a multi-stakeholder approach, in which communities, civil society organisations, government agencies and the private sector work together to implement systematic responses that will help prevent recurring homelessness.

It is acknowledged that organised citizenry or civil society is essential for democracy and development.

These are organisations that work with the government to provide services to vulnerable groups.

The Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum was established and tasked to implement a strategy to co-ordinate a five-year implementation plan, with clear deliverables, targets and time frames.

The steering committee will co-ordinate and monitor the strategy, guided by the Department of Social Development and relevant departments at a regional level.

Representatives from the communities in the boundaries of the CoE, councillors, NPOs, CBOs, FBOs, civil society organisations, rehabilitation services, the regional department of Social Development, the Ekurhuleni Department of Health, the Department of Labour, the Department of Corrections, the Department of Home Affairs, Sassa, private sector business and security organisations and the homeless are called to attend a meeting set for May 19.
The meeting will take place at 09:00 on 8 Kirschner Road, Brentwood Park, Benoni.

All representatives attending will form part of the Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum.

The Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum has a leadership role around advocacy and communication on homelessness issues, and serves as a vehicle for community consultation on the problem and collaboration on solutions, based on five pillars.

The forum met on March 17 and is accepting nominations to the Ekurhuleni Homeless Forum steering committee to lead the forum to meet its objectives.

The forum requires a chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary and deputy secretary.

The forum invites residents to nominate themselves, a colleague, a community leader or representatives to steer the forum.

The goal is to select strong leaders who will focus on fully developing the strategy of the Homeless Forum with a strong focus on the five-year implementation plan.

Required skills for the steering committee members:

• Availability and commitment to participate 18 – 20 days a year.

• Recognised leader with the understanding and knowledge required to help shape the overall strategic direction for homelessness.

• In-depth understanding of and personal commitment to the homeless.

• In-depth knowledge of the issues around homelessness development, and financing for development.

• Facilitative and consultative approach, diplomatic with policy and strategic skills.

• Strong leadership and management skills..

• Ability to act as an ambassador/advocate and to represent the forum at a senior level.

• Access to the necessary communication infrastructure to carry out their role as steering committee members effectively.

• Ability to work in written and spoken English. Additional languages would be an advantage.
