Msane now heads Ekurhuleni water and energy

One of the most challenging portfolios in Ekurhuleni gets a new MMC.

Water and energy, a portfolio facing some of the greatest challenges in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), has a new MMC.

This comes amidst growing concerns regarding service delivery in Ekurhuleni.

Executive Mayor of the CoE, Sivuyile Ngodwana, announced changes to the composition of the mayoral committee on October 9.

Thembi Msane has been appointed MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy. Leshaka Manamela is now head of the environment and waste management services.

Germiston has been plagued by prolonged water and power outages in recent months, aggravated by financial pressure on residents and businesses paying out of their pockets to run generators and for alternative power sources.

Added to that are ongoing problems with water outages in the Germiston area. Residents have complained about increasing health risks due to a lack of water.

Neighbouring suburb Bedfordview has been plagued by water leaks, with a residents group Better Bedfordview announcing on October 10 that its committee has run out of patience with the increasing number of water leaks in and around our streets.

“Bedfordview has essentially become like a sieve with the number of unattended water leaks constituting criminal neglect on the part of council officials,” said Better Bedfordview chairperson Marina Constas.

Both MMCs Msane and Manamebla took the oath of office on October 9 in Germiston.
