Tarentaal Village welcomes new social worker

The Tarentaal Village introduced its newly appointed social worker, Lynn-Marie Barrow.
With a passion for social justice and a wealth of experience working with seniors, Barrow is a valuable addition to the Tarentaal team.
A desire to positively impact the lives of those in need inspired her career.
She said, “As a young girl, the injustices and inequality in the world moved me.”

Barrow’s six years at a frail care centre gave her invaluable insights into the challenges older people and their families face.
At Tarentaal, Barrow supports the residents and their families.
Her typical day involves co-ordinating with the Tarentaal team to address any concerns, replying to emails and calls and regularly visiting residents, including those in recuperative care. She also facilitates family meetings to discuss specific needs and concerns.
Older people’s challenges in a retirement village commonly include falls, declining health, technological challenges and maintaining strong family relationships.
Barrow is dedicated to supporting and guiding in these areas, ensuring the residents receive the help they need.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the joy I see in the eyes of a resident I was able to help. That is priceless,” she said.

Barrow holds a Bachelor of Social Science from Rhodes University and has much experience in social work.
Since joining Tarentaal, Barrow has been impressed by the sense of togetherness and commitment among the staff and residents to create a welcoming and supportive environment.
When not working, the Kensington resident enjoys reading, listening to music, dancing, gardening, staying informed about current events and walking her dog.
She is also a grandmother to Azriella, born last Christmas Day.
“Her presence at Tarentaal will ensure residents continue to receive the support and care they need to live their lives with dignity and independence,” said village manager Tammy Neilson.
Barrow joined Tarentaal at the start of August, taking over the reins from Ulricka Beukman, who became the village deputy manager.
“I live by the motto, borrowed from Mahatma Gandhi, that ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’,” said Barrow.
