Bedfordview water restored after burst hydrant

An underground fire hydrant bursts on Pamin Road in Bedfordview, leaving residents without water while gallons of water stream down the road.

Relief came for Pamin Road, Bedfordview residents, after they endured four days with a limited water supply.

A fire hydrant burst in a residential area on Vorster PI (a street adjacent to Pamin Road) on April 10, leading to a water leak that reached as far as Van Buuren Road.

The underground hydrant’s burst caused low water pressure in the municipal water pipes, resulting in a water supply shortage for residents.

The task of fixing the hydrant was complicated because the repairers had to go underground.

Upon inspection of the repair works on April 15, Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said, “They (contractors) have a hydrant that is open to try to take the pressure off gradually.

“However, this is wasting all the water. What they should be doing is turning the valves off.”

Gallons of water had been wasted, but on the afternoon of that day, the repairs had been completed, and the water supply returned.
