Mayor urges residents to be safe during festive amid increasing crimes
“History has shown that this increased surge leads to more accidents on the roads, leading to fatalities and people incurring life-changing injuries.”
“With the festive season upon us, a significant rise in reckless behaviour leaves many vulnerable to various risks,” said City of ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza.
He said this time of year often sees more criminal activities, scams and irresponsible driving, all of which pose serious threats to public safety.

In response, the Road Traffic Management, the EMPD and the SAPS ramped up efforts to ensure a safer festive period.
The EMPD recently launched its Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, promoting road safety and reducing crime throughout the season.
“Many will travel across the country’s roads to celebrate Christmas with loved ones, resulting in increased traffic volumes,” Xhakaza said.
“Unfortunately, history has shown that this surge often leads to more accidents, fatalities and life-altering injuries.”
The mayor urged Ekurhuleni residents to prioritise safety.

“Stay vigilant because criminals often target communities during this time. Adhere to the road regulations when you travel to your destinations,” he said.
He also encouraged residents to embrace the spirit of the season.
“Take this time to rest and recharge for the year ahead. Let us spread love and unity and lend a helping hand to the less fortunate.”
