RAG urges vigilance after home invasion incident in Bedfordview

Victims of a home invasion in Bedfordview are unharmed after a security company apprehended a man on their property.

The Residents Action Group (RAG) share safety tips with residents after a home invasion in Bedfordview.

BSG Security Solutions shared on its Facebook page that on November 24, they received a call from a client about a person inside their property.

“Reaction and Tactical Units arrived on site in two minutes. They found a person inside the property with house break-in implements and detained them. It was established that the same person was involved in several other incidents in Bedfordview and the surrounding suburbs,” stated BSG.

They added that the SAPS was dispatched, and the person was handed over accordingly.

The RAG is relieved that the victims were unharmed, but urges everyone to remain alert and vigilant as crime escalates in the run-up to the festive season.

• Do not be complacent about security, whether you live in a house, complex, residential estate or a boomed street closure.
• Every home needs several layers of physical security, including alarms and beams, an electric fence, a secure gate and burglar bars.
• The most important security measures for every home are a burglar alarm and panic buttons linked to a reputable alarm monitoring and armed response company.
• Set your alarm every night and whenever you leave home.
• An electric fence is a further deterrent to criminals. Check for vulnerable spots where the fence can be bypassed, like an overhanging tree branch.
• Security beams around your home serve as an early warning system, allowing you and your security company more time to react. Activate them early every evening.
• Secure and sturdy access gates and garage doors are important. Ideally, these should be operated remotely for quick opening and closing. Ensure that gates can’t be lifted off their rails with a crowbar and that gate motors are well hidden and can’t be easily accessed.
• CCTV systems are an easy way for you to keep an eye on your property.
• Streets and homes alongside any park, open land or reserves, and those backing onto the highway, an undeveloped stand, municipal servitude or golf course are especially vulnerable.
• Residents should do a thorough check on anyone working at their home, including contractors and domestic staff. Always get references from friends and neighbours. Don’t rely on the internet and social media.
