WATCH: Police shootout and robbery trigger major response at M2 Cleveland off-ramp

Two arrested as police helicopter and law enforcement flood scene following reported robbery incident.

A police operation unfolded on the M2 towards the Cleveland off-ramp on March 3 at approximately 13:00 following a reported robbery and subsequent shootout.

According to Cleveland Community Police Forum spokesperson Richard Francis, an alleged robbery, still to be formally confirmed by the Cleveland SAPS, took place in the area.

Francis said a shootout occurred during the incident, resulting in the arrest of two suspects, while the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) pursued additional suspects fleeing the scene.

A police helicopter was seen hovering above the crime scene as a heavy police presence secured the area.

Traffic congestion was reported on the M2 East towards Cleveland, with Traffic SA confirming on its X platform that the delays were due to a police-related incident.

Authorities have not yet released further official details.

More information is expected once confirmed by Cleveland SAPS.
