Drunk driver arrested on R24 during EMPD highway operation

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrested two motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during highway patrols in Bedfordview and Vosloorus.

A motorist was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on the R24 highway near Bedfordview during a law enforcement operation conducted by the EMPD.

According to the EMPD, officers from the Freeway Unit were conducting routine patrols and law enforcement operations on major routes across the city when they stopped the driver of a Nissan hatchback near the Barbara Road off-ramp.

The officers observed signs, including slurred speech and the smell of alcohol.

A breathalyser test was conducted, which confirmed that the driver was over the legal alcohol limit. The 43-year-old motorist was then taken to a nearby healthcare facility for further processing before being detained by the police in Bedfordview.

In a separate incident, EMPD officers arrested a 26-year-old motorist on the N3 near the Barry Marais off-ramp in Vosloorus.

Officers stopped the driver of a Volkswagen Citi Golf during a routine patrol. The driver also showed signs of intoxication, and a breathalyser test confirmed that he was over the legal alcohol limit.

The suspect was taken to a healthcare facility for further processing before being detained at the Vosloorus Police Station.

The EMPD said these arrests form part of ongoing law enforcement operations aimed at improving road safety and removing intoxicated drivers from the roads.

Motorists are reminded that driving under the influence of alcohol remains a serious offence and endangers the lives of all road users.
