Bedfordview woman sentenced for R1.2m Land Rover Defender fraud

A 23-year-old female receives her sentence following charges of R1.2m in vehicle fraud laid by the Bedfordview SAPS.

The Bedfordview SAPS have welcomed the sentencing of a 23-year-old female in connection with a fraud case involving a motor vehicle valued at approximately R1.2m.

Spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga reported that on February 10, 2025, the accused went to a motor dealership in Bedfordview to collect a Land Rover Defender.

She had applied online while impersonating someone else, using that person’s identity number and company details. She presented what appeared to be fraudulent identification documents and a driver’s licence.

“Bank officials, who had already flagged the suspicious application, notified the police. Detective Sergeant Steven Vukeya and a member who was on standby, Detective Sergeant Khanyisile Annatolia Hlongwane, responded to the scene. The accused was arrested on charges of fraud. Two other suspects were also arrested at the time and were later released by the court,” stated Modiga.

She added that Vukeya opposed the accused’s bail and she remained in custody.

On June 26, 2026, Meghan Leigh Erwee was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, of which three years were wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of fraud, attempted fraud, theft, attempted theft, or any offence involving dishonesty committed during the period of suspension.

Modiga said, “Bedfordview SAPS commends the quick action by the bank, the dealership, and the investigating team for preventing the loss and ensuring the accused was brought to justice.”
