Emergency Services on high alert as severe weather system brings risk of flooding and storms
Emergency teams have been activated across Ekurhuleni as a powerful weather system is set to impact the region with heavy rain, strong winds, and a sharp drop in temperature.
The warning comes as a cut-off low-pressure system approaches Gauteng, bringing with it the threat of severe thunderstorms, hail, strong winds, and possible localised flooding.
Rainfall of up to 20mm per hour may occur in some areas, with colder conditions expected across the province.
In preparation, DEMS has deployed rescue personnel, firefighters, aquatic units, and disaster management teams across the metro to ensure a swift response to any weather-related incidents.

Heating and fire safety advisory
With the anticipated drop in temperatures, DEMS has urged residents to use heating appliances with care.
The incorrect use of coal stoves, heaters, and fireplaces, especially in poorly ventilated areas, can lead to fires or toxic gas exposure.
Safety tips include:
* Ensure rooms are properly ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide build-up
* Do not leave heaters unattended
* Allow appliances to cool before refuelling
* Use funnels to prevent fuel spillage
* Keep flammable items at least one metre away from heat sources.

Flood and road safety precautions
Motorists are warned to exercise caution during the storm.
Wet roads and reduced visibility heighten the risk of accidents, while floodwaters may conceal potholes or other hazards.
Drivers are advised to:
* Check tyres, wipers, and lights before travelling
* Maintain a safe following distance
* Drive slowly on wet roads
* Avoid flooded areas and submerged bridges
* Be cautious near low-lying and flood-prone locations
DEMS continues to monitor the situation and urges residents to stay updated through official channels.
