This initiative forms part of a broader national campaign, which aims to see one million trees planted throughout South Africa.
“Trees are essential for our environment. They not only beautify our surroundings and purify the air we breathe, but they also help prevent soil erosion and provide many other ecosystem benefits,” the city said in a statement.
The city emphasised that every tree planted contributes significantly to conservation efforts and helps reduce soil erosion, which could worsen during the approaching rainy season.
