Water leak forces Edenvale Bowling Club to launch fundraiser

Edenvale Bowling Club plays fundraiser game in order to raise funds to cover a water bill of around R80 000 following a leak.

A water leak at the Edenvale Bowling Club prompted a We’ve Sprung a Leak Fundraiser, which took place at the club premises on May 17.

Club president Bernyce Hollingworth said the leak had been ongoing for two months and was difficult to detect because an irrigation pipe was connected to the source.

“We know from the readings that we are going to receive a huge bill. So basically, before we get ‘knocked out of the park’, we’re trying to fundraise enough money to cover in the vicinity of R80 000 for the water bill,” Hollingworth said.

She explained that they had actually changed the format of bowls for the day and were playing the game backwards.

Hollingworth described, “So you actually roll your ball, and then you throw the jack afterwards. And whoever’s ball the jack lands closest to wins. So you’re not aiming at anything at this point, you’re just throwing into the air.”

She added that afterwards they were going to have a corner-to-corner, where you bowl from one corner of the lawn to the other corner.

The club president commended the community and club members who came to help out.

She extended her gratitude to the engineering team, plumbers, and an anonymous donor for the generous amount they gave.

“We were collecting for a borehole to help us, but now everything we have collected will go to the municipality. Even though this is municipal property, the fact that the leak is inside our premises is why we are charged.”

The president also invited the community to try out bowls on a Saturday for free.
