Security learnership boosts suburb safety and empowers unemployed youth

RAG hires unemployed youth to curb crime in the area.

Bedfordview NPO Residents Action Group (RAG) launched a learnership programme to improve neighbourhood safety and security while empowering unemployed youth.

Through the Safety and Security Sector Training and Education Authority (Sasseta) and in partnership with P&C Security Services, RAG has employed 20 learners, 10 of whom currently patrol Bedfordview.

The organisation said the benefactors act as additional eyes and ears on the ground for RAG and local security role players.

RAG chairperson Anjela da Silva said, “RAG recognises the pressing issue of youth unemployment in our country and the rise in crime everywhere, including in our suburb.

“This initiative aligns with RAG’s commitment to protecting residents and their properties, fostering community well-being and empowering the next generation.”

The learners are new to the security industry.

Some of them might become security guards or pursue other careers in the industry.

They have received basic academic training on security practices and processes and are busy with the practical component of the learnership.

“The learners have been introduced to the local police station and RAG business members in the area. They work closely with RAG supervisors and communicate with RAG’s Bedfordview control centre.

“RAG reaction vehicles are also in close contact with them,” added Da Silva.

Da Silva said the learners are deployed on the “restaurant strip” opposite the Bedfordview Police Station.

“Their patrols create a visible security presence to deter crime,” she stated.

Residents are urged to report suspicious activity to RAG’s 24-hour control centre on 082 322 3333 or 011 455 7022.
