Alleged thief sustains serious burn wounds after attempt to steal cables in Edenvale

An alleged cable theft suspect was taken to hospital after he caught on fire while trying to steal cables.

A suspected cable thief is in hospital fighting for his life after catching fire while allegedly trying to steal cables from a transformer at Karaglen in Edenvale.

An eyewitness told Bedfordview and Edenvale News the suspect came running from across the road to the parking lot at Karaglen Shopping Centre.

Medical officials on the scene took the suspect to the hospital.

“I heard loud noises of someone calling for help, only to spot a guy running around in the parking lot on fire. He was covered in flames and had a reflecting jacket on.

“We tried to get him help, as did the security,” said the eyewitness.

The suspect then collapsed in the parking lot.

An ambulance later took him to hospital.

Ekurhuleni district communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela said, “On February 1, Edenvale police responded to a scene at Karaglen, Edenvale.

“On arrival, they found an unknown male with burn wounds.

The infrastructure in question.

“It was alleged the suspect was tampering with essential infrastructure, digging up cables, when a fire started.

“He sustained severe burned wounds.”

An enquiry docket is open at the Edenvale Police Station.
