Locals take action after attempted hijacking at Boeing Road N3 underpass

This comes after a woman was shot under the Gillooly’s bridge (near Essexwold/government garage) on March 11 in an attempted hijacking.

In response to recent incidents and rising safety concerns, community organisations, including security NPO Residents Action Group (RAG) and Essexwold Fairway Residents Association (EFRA), have joined forces to raise funds for a comprehensive security solution at the Boeing Road N3 underpass.

This comes after a woman was shot under the Gillooly’s bridge (near Essexwold/government garage) on March 11 in an attempted hijacking.

The Bedfordview SAPS has confirmed that a case of attempted murder has since been opened.

RAG and EFRA said this solution will include additional lighting, fencing, cameras and street signs.

To enhance the safety of all road users, RAG has stationed a reaction officer at the underpass during peak traffic hours from Monday to Friday.

RAG chairperson Anjela da Silva outlines the next steps: “Strong, secure fencing on the highway boundary is vital to stop the criminals that are escaping via the highway.

“With the installation of security cameras, we aim to deter criminals, enhance surveillance capabilities in the area, and provide all security role players and SAPS with valuable evidence to apprehend perpetrators.

“Additional lighting, including solar streetlights, will help to keep the area brighter and safer even during load-shedding.”

The cameras will be monitored by RAG’s control centre, which is already monitoring cameras in the area.

Alerts from the cameras will be responded to 24/7 by RAG reaction vehicles, who are patrolling Bedfordview.

Residents, businesses and stakeholders are urged to contribute to community safety by donating to this project.

“With your support and involvement, we can make our neighbourhood safer for everyone,” Da Silva stressed.

“Together, we can take a proactive stance against crime and create a secure environment where residents can live, work, drive and thrive without fear, and where criminals know there is zero crime tolerance.”
