EMPD recovers illegal assault rifle, ammunition and vehicle in operation

This after a tip-off was received from a source who notified the police about a robbery in progress at Umfeyaneng Section.

The EMPD carried out patrols around Thembisa including Winnie Mandela and the northern region on March 9.

Officers responded to the location and on arrival they noticed a silver Ford Fiesta hatchback parked inside the property.

The police searched the vehicle and found a Colt semi-automatic rifle with intact serial numbers.

The weapon was loaded with 27 live rounds.

A further magazine and one round were found under the seat.

The EMPD armoury officers were summoned to the scene to identify the calibre of the firearm.

They confirmed that the rifle was not registered in the Republic of South Africa.

Marie Mashishi, media liaison officer for the EMPD said a case of an illegal weapon and ammunition was registered at the Tembisa South Police Station.

“No arrests were made. The vehicle found on the scene has been booked at the SAP13 for further investigations,” she added.
