City acknowledges ongoing issue of illegal dumping in Meadowdale

“In future, we shall look into the matter. In the meantime, we appeal to everyone to respect the environment and help protect it by not dumping illegally, which carries a fine of up to R2 000 if caught.”

In light of the concerns about illegal dumping, the CoE said it is aware of the ongoing issue near Brickfield Road.
It regularly monitors the location and does clean-ups as needed.

According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, residents and nearby factories seem to use the area as an illegal landfill site.

“The waste department is and will regularly continue to monitor the situation and do clean-ups when needed.

“The clean-ups will focus on the domestic waste that is always attended to regularly,” said Dlamini.

He confirmed that ‘No Dumping’ signs were erected but stolen. Their replacement is affected by the department’s strained budget.

“In future, we shall look into the matter. In the meantime, we appeal to everyone to respect the environment and help protect it by not dumping illegally, which carries a fine of up to R2 000 if caught.”

Dlamini said besides a fine, community members would also have to clean the waste they dumped
Addressing the alleged lack of EMPD vehicles needed to do by-law enforcement, Dlamini said by-law enforcement is a multi-disciplinary function done by various departments, not necessarily the EMPD.

“When these functions are carried out, various departments like health, the DEMS, the EMPD and legal and corporate come together to ensure that all law enforcement aspects are covered. These operations are planned resources pulled together to ensure their successful execution,” said Dlamini.

He said some challenges identified when trying to monitor and control illegal dumping include a lack of staff, a shortage of specialised equipment, and no dedicated personnel to deal with it.

Dlamini said people can report illegal dumping to waste management depots. The only information needed is the address where the dumping is or was happening.

Community members can remain anonymous.

People can also report illegal dumping on 0860 54 3000 or the MyCoE App.
