JRA comments on road works on Modderfontein Road

In mid-November concerns regarding the seemingly halted road works surrounding Modderfontein Road’s northern and southern bridges were brought into question by Inyoni Creek residents Shirley Pein and Lyonell Fliss.

The duo highlighted concerns regarding the lack of visible work and questioned why concrete and plastic barriers had been left along the road and bridge.

According to the JRA, barricades are still in place to create a two-way traffic flow on the southern bridge.

JRA’s HOD of infrastructure development Kwazelela Mcetywa said the northern bridge is susceptible to further erosion under the structure.

“This side has been closed for public safety and to limit traffic loads on the bridge structure.

“However, unfortunately, the northern bridge has not remained closed as on several occasions with barricades being removed.”

JRA appealed to the members of the public not to tamper with the road barricading and road safety signage as these are placed to ensure the safety of motorists.

According to Mcetywa, the repair work is at 50% completion. Work started in 2021.

He said at the southern bridge, the widening of the bridge structure is underway to cater for the widening of the stream/river. However, this still needs to be done on the northern bridge.

The repair works and improvements were necessary to prevent flood water from the Jukskei River from flowing over the bridges.

Explaining why work stopped at the location Mcetywa said work halted due to poor performance of the appointed contractor.

“There is a budget to start with the project towards the end of the financial year.

This will spill over to the next financial year. The procurement process for the panel of bridge contractors is also underway,” said Mcetywa.
