Cleaning operations underway along Modderfontein Road – CoJ

The problem of illegal dumping at this location has been discussed in several regional meetings.

After concerns were raised about the amount of illegally dumped material along Modderfontein Road, the City of Johannesburg has responded stating that it is aware of the situation.

Located near the intersection of Modderfontein and Pretoria roads where Modderfontein Road’s bridges cross the Jukskei River, an assortment of rubbish and debris can be found on the northern side of Modderfontein Road.

In early October, Inyoni Creek resident Shirley Pein raised concerns about the out-of-control illegal dumping that posed a potential health risk to the surrounding community.

According to Pickitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi, the CoJ is aware of the dumped materials at the site.

“It is challenging for Pikitup to specify exactly when it became aware of the issue, as the site where the illegal dumping occurred falls under the responsibility of City Parks.

“The problem of illegal dumping at this location has been discussed in several Region E regional meetings.”

Mkhwanazi said the meetings resulted in a resolution that city departments would conduct a joint clean-up campaign to clear the illegally dumped material at the site.

He said the clearing of the illegal dumping has commenced.

Although clean-up operations have started, Mkhwanazi said it appears that dumping is continuing at night and by-law enforcement must be improved.

Highlighting some of the challenges experienced with illegal dumping, Mkhwanazi said the main problem stems from companies that avoid paying landfill fees by dumping waste illegally.

“Addressing illegal dumping requires the vigilance of community members, who can help protect their surroundings from being exploited by unscrupulous individuals or companies,” said Mkhwanazi.

He said curbing illegal dumping and keeping neighbourhoods clean is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort.

To bring those who illegally dump to justice, Mkhwanazi said CoJ needs active citizens who will take photographs containing the number plate of the vehicle used, photograph the illegal dumper if possible, capture the actual act, and provide the date of the incident while also alerting the JMPD to the incident.

Once this is done, JMPD can enforce the waste by-laws by arresting culprits.

Mkhwanazi said if found guilty of illegal dumping the vehicle used during the illegal dumping will be confiscated by JMPD and a fine imposed.

Illegal dumping must be reported to the JMPD or 082 779 1361.
