WARNING: Business robberies on the rise

Always use a reputable company when selecting security guards, rotate the guards and insist they are regularly vetted.

Fidelity ADT has warned all business owners, particularly those carrying cash and fast-moving goods like electronics, to be on high alert.

This warning comes after armed business robberies in the Johannesburg business district and the surrounding areas, particularly Hillbrow, Bedfordview and Joubert Park.

Charnel Hattingh, the group head of marketing and communications for Fidelity ADT, said: “We are seeing an increase in business robberies, particularly at retail outlets like fast food outlets and clothing stores, which are easily accessible.

“In most incidents, the suspects pretend to be customers and then proceed to rob the store.

“Business owners must be vigilant, make sure their CCTV is working and remain vigilant for any suspicious activity.”

She recommended at least two staff members always carry hidden panic buttons and that visitors to these outlets must also be vigilant.

“Generally, the suspects are after the till money and not out to rob the customers, but it is still a high-alert situation,” she said.

She gives these tips and precautions:

• Controlled entrances prevent over-crowding in your premises, so ensure you can restrict movement at the entrances and exits to your business for staff and customers;

• Be alert during opening and closing times and work in pairs to prevent being surprised or overpowered by criminals, and train your staff to ask for ID before allowing entry to the premises

• Make sure all outside entrances and inside security doors have deadbolt locks. If you use padlocks, they should be made of steel and kept locked at all times

Remember to remove serial numbers from your locks to prevent keys from being duplicated.

• Windows should have secure locks and burglar-resistant glass. Consider installing metal grates on all your windows except the display windows

• Light the inside and outside of your business, especially around doors, windows, skylights and other entry points. Consider installing covers over the exterior lights and power sources to deter tampering.

• Always use a reputable company when selecting security guards, rotate the guards and insist they are regularly vetted.

• Keep your cash register from being seen from outside your business so the police can monitor it during the day or night. Leave it open and empty after closing.

• Be sure your safe is fireproof and securely anchored.

Remember to change your security password when an employee who had access to it leaves.

• Invest in an alarm, CCTV and an electronic article surveillance system that meets your security needs

•  Learn how to use your system correctly and check it daily. It is advisable to run a test when closing.

• Most important is updating your data before closing your business for any holiday season.

“Make sure all the relevant information is updated should we need to contact you or the person in charge.

“We recommend that business owners in high-risk areas consult their security providers for a full risk assessment to ensure the premises and staff are protected fully against this type of crime,” shared Hattingh.
