Edenvale’s Green Room offers victims of abuse and trauma sanctuary

“They helped me calm down, taking their time to assist me.”

Community members in distress and victims of trauma now have a place of safety and refuge with the official opening of Edenvale’s very own Green Room.

Located at Edenvale Police Station, the room hopes to serve as a safe haven for those who have suffered at the hands of abusers, victims of gender-based violence and similar crimes.

A joint initiative between the community and the police, the room was unveiled to the community during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign on December 5.

The project, initiated by Margaret and Carrie Marshall, was the labour of community members hoping to create a more welcoming environment for victims of crime.

Margaret, who recently turned to the police for assistance, commended Edenvale Police Station’s staff for their empathy and willingness to help her.

“I landed up at the police station and needed assistance. From when I walked in the staff were brilliant and caring. They helped me calm down, taking their time to assist me.”

Because of the nature of her case, Margaret was taken to a room separate from the charge office.

“The room looked clean, neat and tidy, but was unwelcoming and lacked warmth.”

Hoping to change this, the Marshall’s idea to create a safe place was started.

Having obtained permission from the station commander, the duo co-ordinated with volunteers to create an inviting safe harbour for community members in need.

Taking several weeks to complete, the room was repainted, murals and furniture added while a small garden was cultivated to create a peaceful calm outside space.

Acting station commander Colonel Susan Mathebule welcomed the project’s completion.

“We are very proud of what was achieved here. This room is beautiful and will make a difference to community members.”

Acting head of Vispol, Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, said while the room was only officially opened on December 5, it was already being used before then to make a difference.

“We will utilise this space and look after it to make a difference in the community.”

Chairperson of Edenvale CPF Sheryl Damerell explained that the room was created to provide a haven where individuals can begin their healing journey in an environment filled with compassion, understanding, and empowerment.

Challenging other police stations to create their own Green Rooms, Sheryl emphasised the need for spaces which offer confidentiality and compassion to those in need.

“When reporting sensitive matters, community members are already in a heightened emotional and mental state. Often situations can become overwhelming, and in many instances, why cases are dropped or not pursued.”

The Green Room is about to be unveiled. Seen here are acting station commander Colonel Susan Mathebule and Pretoria’s Colonel Heila Niemand, volunteers Layha and Sash Pillay with the chairperson of Edenvale CPF, Sheryl Damerell.

Offering confidential support services, vital resources, healing programmes and workshops, the room provides a network of support and care.

Sheryl said the room is more than just a space.

“It’s a promise to stand with those who need it most. Whether you’re seeking help or supporting someone on their path to recovery, the Green Room is here to welcome you.”
