New Vispol commander aims to crack down on crime in Edenvale
“I have already noticed some of the challenges Edenvale is facing and have developed strategies to try and combat these.”
Edenvale’s new Vispol commander, Lieutenant Colonel Shadrack Magcuntsu, hopes to create a safer community for all.
Formerly stationed at Kempton Park Police Station as the Vispol support commander, Magcuntsu is confident in his abilities to make a difference and reduce crime in Edenvale.
He was appointed Edenvale’s Vispol commander on February 10.

“Since I arrived in Edenvale it has felt like home. I hope to bring change to create a better and safer environment for all residents.”
With over 30 years of experience in the service, Magcuntsu has spent time working in the client service centre, was a relief commander, a field trainer for new SAPS members, and a sector coordinator.
Throughout his career Magcuntsu was drawn to crime prevention, working with the community and visible policing.

Magcuntsu said his passion for fighting crime stemmed from his childhood.
“Growing up in a township there were always crime. As the community, we sometimes felt helpless not knowing what to do when we saw criminals committing a crime,” said Magcuntsu.

To make a difference, Magcuntsu volunteered with the SAPS from an early age.
Magcuntsu said by interacting and working alongside the police his interest in crime fighting grew.
Magcuntsu said that he enjoys being on the ground working with the community.
“My past experiences and history in the service help me to know what challenges I might face.
“I have already noticed some of the challenges Edenvale is facing and have developed strategies to combat these.”
According to Magcuntsu, crimes of concern in Edenvale include theft out of motor vehicles, theft from motor vehicles, residential break-ins and the use of drugs.
He said some of the most common drugs found and confiscated in Edenvale include marijuana, cocaine, mandrax and Nyaope.
Discussing his strategy, Magcuntsu said a proactive approach is vital.
He said by working with and involving stakeholders such as the CPF and private security companies, information is shared with the police so that campaigns and initiatives can be formulated.

“The community are the eyes and ears. The SAPS cannot win without them,” said Magcuntsu.
The second part of Magcuntsu’s strategy takes on more of a reactive approach by following up on information provided by the community and stakeholders while actively policing the community.
Magcuntsu encouraged those with any information about suspects or crimes to contact him.
