Against all odds: Bedfordview teen excels in matric and aims for global dreams

Against the odds, Nicola Mc Donald earned seven distinctions in her matric, while facing a devastating personal loss. Now, with a dream to study abroad and a community rallying behind her, her journey is just beginning.

The Bedfordview community came together in heartfelt support of Nicola Mc Donald, a young student who earned seven distinctions in her matric year despite extraordinary personal hardship.

Her father, Alistair, passed away on March 2.

Known for his warmth, generosity and sharp sense of humour, he was a Jeppe High School for Boys old boy who actively supported many school and community fundraisers.

His death followed a hijacking during Nicola’s final matric exams, making her achievement more remarkable.

Nicola plans to begin her studies at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands this September and already has a 25% bursary but needs additional funds to cover tuition and living expenses.

A fundraising campaign is helping her realise her dream, and community members can donate at www.itmarketing.co.za/Nicola-Mc Donald/

Nicola shared, “Inspired by my mother’s artistry and my father’s indomitable belief in dreaming big, my childhood was painted with vibrant shades of ambition and possibility.

“My aspiration to explore and grow beyond familiar horizons is a tribute to the foundation they laid for me, a legacy enriched by the support and kindness of each of you.

“As I embark on this journey, I carry their dreams and the collective hope and support of everyone who believes in me.”

Since January, she has taken on part-time tutoring, waitressing and selling sketches to save for her studies. She also offers custom portrait commissions to support her fundraising.

Those interested can email her on nicola.mcd17@gmail.com for prices and enquiries.

This fundraiser honours the memory of a father who always showed up for his community – and now the community is showing up for his daughter.

Every contribution supports Nicola’s future and keeps Alistair’s generous spirit alive.
