Volunteers at Bedfordview Rotary Book Centre help bring books to rural schools

The Rotary Club of Bedfordview collects and donates books to under-resourced schools and learning organisations.

For the past 18 to 20 years, the Rotary Club of Bedfordview has played a key role in the Humanitarian Book Centre, a long-standing initiative established in collaboration with other local Rotary clubs.

The centre sources thousands of donated books from Rotary clubs in the United States, with the majority being educational materials ranging from Grade 1 to matric. The collection also includes a variety of novels and general reading books.

Once donated, the books are packed onto pallets and shipped in containers to South Africa. Upon arrival, they are distributed to under-resourced schools and libraries, particularly in rural areas where access to educational resources is limited.

Schools and libraries are encouraged to contact the centre to arrange book collections, which can be used both in classrooms and school libraries.

While the book donations are free, a small contribution is appreciated to help support the centre’s operational and administrative costs.

The Book Centre is entirely run by volunteers who generously give their time and expertise to manage and distribute the books. Their efforts help ensure that knowledge reaches the learners and communities who need it most.

The Rotary Club Humanitarian Book Centre is located behind the Bedfordview Health Clinic, within the municipal sanitation buildings. It is open from Monday to Thursday, between 9:00 and 13:00.
