Bedfordview children’s fun corner celebrates in style despite library closure
Despite the last-minute closure of Bedfordview Library, the Children’s Fun Corner birthday bash went ahead at Glendower Golf Club, bringing joy and magic to nearly 100 children and families.
The unexpected closure of Bedfordview Library did not stop the Children’s Fun Corner from celebrating its second birthday in style on July 5.
Organisers Mona and Vis Naidoo were informed at the last minute that the library would be closed, with no formal notice from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
“There was little regard for how much this day meant to the children and community,” they said. Despite efforts by library staff and Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys to intervene, the doors remained shut.
Fortunately, Tee Bar & Grill at Glendower Golf Club stepped in and offered their venue, ensuring the celebration went ahead and soared to new heights.

Nearly 100 children and adults attended, travelling from Bedfordview, Edenvale, Germiston, Primrose, Boksburg, Benoni, Randburg, Norwood, and Sunninghill.
With the theme ‘UP: Adventures Await Us’, the day was filled with magic and imagination. Storyteller Orefile Magawane captivated both children and adults, while the lively “Finding Kevin” adventure led the youngsters on a laughter-filled search.
Lite Booth’s photo station, managed by Thio Naidoo, captured joyful moments. Cupcakes from Eastgate Management added sweetness, Cloud 9 Cotton Candy’s Rita Chen spun fluffy treats, and Turkish Kebab Restaurant sponsored helium balloons that brightened the sky.

Parents and grandparents played a vital role, contributing treats, second-hand clothes, and helping with setup and gift distribution.
“The venue changed, the surprises kept coming, but the joy never stopped. These monthly events are a lifeline for imagination and togetherness,” said one parent.
Mona added, “Especially during Mandela Month, this is our way of serving — building a better future by nurturing our children and creating spaces filled with love and hope.”

The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed the library was closed on the day. Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said staff were informed of the closure.
While next month’s operations are yet to be confirmed, Dlamini stated the library would remain open on July 26 and is expected to continue operating in the coming months.
