Bedfordview SPCA AGM highlights 2024 milestones and urgent needs
The SPCA honoured staff and volunteers while reporting 298 adoptions and 680 proactive inspections. But its biggest concern remains the lack of a reliable vehicle to support field operations.
The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA held its AGM to reflect on the year past and chart the way forward for animal welfare in Germiston and Bedfordview on July 19.
The AGM was not an election year, as the current management committee is serving a two-year term ending in July 2026. The committee consists of Christine Kuch, Hilary Mitchley, Gabbi de Brito, Taso Tofas and Jacques Peacock.
According to Peacock, the chairperson’s report, delivered by Kuch, highlighted a year of steady recovery and renewed momentum, from critical facility upgrades and expanded outreach, to significant investigative and preventative action by their dedicated team.

• Some 298 animals found homes through adoption (60 cats and 238 dogs);
• Some 101 animals were sterilised through outreach or social assistance support;
• Infrastructure upgrades, from roof repairs to beautifying the premises, were completed to improve animal welfare and public experience.

“One of the most pressing challenges facing our SPCA is our vehicle crisis. We are operating with only two vehicles, both in poor condition and unreliable.

“At times, our inspectors have had to limit their distance from base due to fears that the vehicle might break down and be unable to return,” said Peacock.
“This isn’t just an inconvenience; it directly impacts our ability to respond to animal cruelty complaints, collect animals, deliver outreach support and provide emergency response.
“Despite donors who have helped us with tyres, services and urgent repairs, the reality is that we urgently need a reliable vehicle to continue our work effectively.
“While a funding appeal was launched to buy a suitable vehicle, we have not yet reached our target. The funds raised Aare secured in a separate, interest-generating account, but we need the community’s help to get us the rest of the way,” added Peacock.

Certificates of appreciation went to staff in recognition of their dedication, and long-serving staff member Piet Mpye was honoured nationally at the NSPCA AGM in October 2024.

“Being on the committee requires the application of all kinds of skills to make sure our SPCA keeps going and growing.
“We are united in our commitment to prevent cruelty and spread compassion, and we are grateful for everyone who walks this road with us,” said Kuch.
They thanked the community, donors, volunteers, staff and fellow animal welfare advocates for their steadfast support.
The AGM was held at the Bedfordview Methodist Church.
