Ekurhuleni District hosts first employee wellness day Correctional Services

MEC for Health and Wellness, Ms Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, led the first Ekurhuleni District Employee Wellness Day.

Ekurhuleni District Health Services hosted its first employee wellness day at Boksburg Correctional Services on September 12.

The initiative aimed to promote staff health and well-being.

The district partnered with the prison to ensure a full programme of activities, which included aerobics, health screenings, dental checks, massages, and wellness guidance from service providers.

MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, who led the initiative, commended healthcare staff for dedicating time to their health and well-being.

“Healthy habits such as eating nutritious meals, staying physically active, managing stress, and prioritising rest not only prevent illness but also improve our quality of life,” she said.

She urged staff to embrace the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of 150 minutes of physical activity every week.

Nkomo-Ralehoko also highlighted the importance of regular health screenings.
“Many conditions, such as non-communicable diseases and certain cancers, can be silent until it is too late. Early detection and timely intervention can make all the difference,” she said.

The MEC emphasised that wellness goes beyond being free from illness.

“Wellness is about living with vitality, balance, and strength. Investing in your health is one of the most significant investments you can make. A healthier you is a stronger you.”

“Let us take responsibility for our health and support one another in making better choices,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
