City acknowledges tender delays affecting Klopperpark Pool

The City of Ekurhuleni has acknowledged that due to internal policies and procedures, tender delays have led to Klopperpark Swimming Pool not being opened for the swimming season.

As spring began, the City of Ekurhuleni opened 11 of its 37 swimming pools.

remains one of the 26 pools not opened for the swimming season, which runs from September 1 to March 31 next year.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said a tender for the pool is in process but was delayed due to internal policies and procedures.

He explained, “The application for a new tender for all Ekurhuleni pools, including Klopperpark Pool, was initiated on January 3 to have a new tender in place by July 1, 2025, as the then-current tender would expire on June 30, 2025.

“Due to internal procedures, the tender was not awarded before July 1, which is the start of the new financial year. In June 2025, a mini-tender was initiated to ensure the availability of chlorine gas.”

Dlamini said the item is still with the Bid Evaluation Committee for recommendation.

Thereafter, it will be submitted to the Bid Award Committee for approval. Once approved, Service Level Agreements will be drafted and signed, after which an official order will be created. He added that the pool will open as soon as the chlorine gas has been delivered on site.

Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro said the pool has problems with its pumps and the pool itself needs resurfacing.

“Unfortunately, the pool will remain closed; it is too dangerous to let people into the space. Also, with the green water, I would not want children or residents to get sick,” he said.

The councillor added that the city is misleading residents of Klopperpark by saying the pool is closed due to a lack of chemicals, even though there are a few bags of chlorine present.

As the pool remains closed, the city is paying staff and lifeguards to protect it.

Meanwhile, Dlamini noted that Klopperpark is close to Edenvale and Delville swimming pools, which are open and available to all communities.
