Eastleigh Primary learners shine at 24SumMore maths competition

Two learners from Eastleigh Primary in Edenvale make their school proud as they come out first and third in the 24SumMore Maths Competition.

Two Eastleigh Primary School learners made the top three at the 24SumMore Maths Competition finals.

The event was held at Peregrine Capital’s Sandton offices on October 31. Eastleigh Primary’s principal, Nonhlanhla Ngwenya, shared that Olwethu Ndebele came first and Kemoratile Nyundu came third.

Twenty-four bright young finalists from 18 primary schools across Gauteng participated in the dynamic pilot programme designed to make maths exciting, engaging, and confidence-building for learners.

The 24 finalists battled it out for top honours, showcasing their skill and composure under pressure. The finalists were a mixture of Grades Four, Five, and Six learners who all play at the same level.

Learner prizes: Investment accounts for the top three learners (first – R25 000, second – R15 000, third – R10 000).
All finalists: R5 000 in an investment account.

School prizes: The schools of the top three learners received R25 000, R15 000, and R10 000, respectively.

Teacher prize: The teacher who demonstrated exceptional dedication received a brand-new iPad.

Investment accounts were chosen to spark an early interest in financial literacy and long-term financial planning among learners.

From the start, 24SumMore aimed to reimagine maths as something thrilling, creative, and social – not just another subject on the timetable.

Based on the ‘24 Game’ challenge format, the competition rewards quick thinking, strategy, and mental agility.

Both learners and teachers from 54 schools embraced the format with enthusiasm and competitiveness, transforming classrooms into hubs of excitement and discovery.

“We’re bringing the fun back into maths,” said Jacques Conradie, CEO of Peregrine Capital and a former national maths champion in Maths 24.

“When kids enjoy maths, they gain confidence. This confidence becomes the foundation for future excellence. Confident kids don’t just solve problems; they learn to love solving them.”
