Female pedestrian killed in early-morning collision on N3 freeway in Bedfordview

Two lanes were temporarily closed as emergency services and EMPD attended to the fatal incident near the Van Buuren Road off-ramp in the early hours of Tuesday.

A female pedestrian has died after being struck by a light motor vehicle on the N3 freeway in Bedfordview during the early hours of Tuesday, 30 December 2025.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) reported receiving a call about a pedestrian-vehicle accident at approximately 00:17.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway of the N3, just before the Van Buuren Road off-ramp.

Emergency rescue teams responded promptly to the scene, where they found the body of an adult female lying in the middle of the freeway.

A light motor vehicle, identified as an SUV, was discovered several metres away on the side of the road, with visible damage to its front.

Paramedics assessed the pedestrian and declared her dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

The scene was handed over to City of Ekurhuleni traffic officials, including the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), for further investigation.

During scene rehabilitation, two of the five freeway lanes were temporarily closed to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and motorists.

The deceased was later removed from the scene by Forensic Pathology Services and transported to a pathological facility in Germiston.

The City of Ekurhuleni has once again urged pedestrians to avoid freeways, warning that entering these roads poses a serious risk and continues to result in unnecessary loss of life.
