CHOC – Step out in support of Flip Flop Day (Video)

The CHOC’s annual Flip Flop Day returns on February 20 to raise funds and awareness for children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer.

South Africans are again asked to put their best foot forward for a good cause – Flip Flop Day on February 20.

Led by the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA, Flip Flop Day is a national fundraising and awareness campaign that encourages people, schools and workplaces to buy a R10 sticker and wear their flip flops in solidarity with children and adolescents affected by cancer.

Flip Flop Day invites schools, workplaces and communities to step out together in support of children facing cancer across South Africa.

According to the CHOC, the campaign highlights how small, collective actions can translate into meaningful and life-changing support for families navigating childhood cancer.

“This fun campaign carries a serious message: No family should walk the childhood cancer journey alone,” said CHOC CEO Hedley Lewis.

“A small action, like buying a R10 sticker, enables the CHOC to provide practical, emotional and educational support to children, adolescents and their families when they need it most.”

The funds raised will help the CHOC deliver essential services, including safe accommodation near treatment centres, transport assistance, psychosocial support and educational programmes that allow young patients to continue learning during treatment.

The 2026 campaign focuses on friendship and shared participation, encouraging people to get involved together as colleagues, classmates, families and communities.

Supporters show their backing for Flip Flop Day by wearing flip flops and stickers to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

Getting involved is simple. Buy a Flip Flop Day sticker for R10 from the CHOC or Tekkie Town stores nationwide, wear your flip flops and stickers on February 20, encourage others to take part and share photos on social media using the hashtag #FlipFlopDay26.

The CHOC highlighted how collective participation directly supports families. Twenty people buying a sticker can help cover a child’s average monthly transport costs to and from treatment. Thirty can fund a CHOC Carebag, which every newly diagnosed child or teenager receives.

These bags include essential toiletries and a parent handbook to help families understand and prepare for the journey ahead.

Sixty people participating can fund one night’s accommodation for a child and caregiver at a CHOC House, providing a safe room and meals at no cost.

The day’s success is supported by several purpose-aligned partners. Tekkie Town makes participation accessible through its national store network, while logistics partner The Courier Guy helps distribute campaign materials across the country.

Flip Flop Day invites schools, workplaces and communities to step out together in support of children facing cancer across South Africa.

Footwear brand Ipanema supports the campaign as product partner, reinforcing the idea that everyday items can become symbols of hope, while OUTsurance provides additional backing to help extend the campaign’s reach.

The CHOC said Flip Flop Day continues to demonstrate the power of unity and compassion, ensuring that children and teens facing cancer are supported every step of the way.
