Green thumbs bloom at Ron Smith Care Centre on International Flower Day
Residents at Ron Smith Care Centre marked International Flower Day by planting succulents, enjoying a hands-on gardening activity focused on wellbeing and creativity.
Residents of Ron Smith Care Centre (RSCC) got their green thumbs out when they recently celebrated International Flower Day.
Observed on January 19, the celebrations were at the centre on January 20.
This year, the RSCC opted for longer-lasting blooms, with residents planting succulents.
Although succulents aren’t technically flowers, they are flowering plants, and residents now wait in anticipation of their colourful displays as they flourish throughout RSCC.

The morning started with fascinating flower facts shared by Karabo Matlaletsa, followed by a competition where one resident won a box of chocolate nougat after finding a hidden note under her pot.
From there, residents immersed themselves in choosing a succulent, potting it with care, adding decorative stones, and finishing it off with a hessian ribbon for the perfect touch.
The morning ended on a sweet note with tea or coffee and a flower-shaped biscuit baked by the recreational team.
“Taking time to appreciate the flowers and nature around us is so important. It helps ground us, calm us, and remind us to be grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.
“Gardening offers endless benefits, engaging all our senses, keeping us active, and bringing peace to both heart and mind,” said Simoné Botha, RSCC’s manager of OT and recreation.
