The City of Ekurhuleni remains on high alert following persistent heavy rainfall that has raised concerns about potential flooding and dangerous conditions across the region.

Heavy downpours on March 21 have left the ground saturated, significantly increasing the likelihood of flooding in low-lying areas.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) warned that rivers, streams and dams are experiencing stronger water currents, posing a serious risk to anyone in or near these areas.

Residents living near flood-prone zones have been advised to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures as conditions may worsen.

Motorists have also been cautioned to drive carefully, as wet and slippery roads, combined with hidden potholes, create hazardous driving conditions.

Authorities are encouraging drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said emergency teams are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to respond where necessary.

“We urge residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary risks, especially near water bodies where conditions can change rapidly,” he said.

With the rain expected to continue until Wednesday, motorists need to adapt their driving to suit these rainy conditions.

EMPD safety tips:

• Following distance: Keep a longer following distance from the car ahead of you. Brake earlier, enter corners at slower speeds, have a firm grip on the steering wheel, switch on the headlights in poor visibility and always focus on the road ahead.

• Wipers: Front and back windscreen wipers must be checked regularly to ensure that they are working properly.

• Brakes and tyres: It is important that motorists check that their brakes are in good working order. The condition of the tyres of the vehicle must be inspected often, as tyres with reduced tread depth may cause the vehicle to skid on wet roads.

• Safety belt: Crashes in wet conditions are common, and everyone should make a conscious effort to drive safely.
