City engages stakeholders to strengthen airport and public transport links

The City of Ekurhuleni highlighted collaboration and commuter-focused solutions at the ACSA Transport Indaba, aiming to enhance safety, connectivity, and efficiency across public transport, including the Harambee bus system and OR Tambo International Airport links.

The City of Ekurhuleni has underscored the importance of collaboration in improving public transport following its participation in the ACSA Transport Indaba held at OR Tambo International Airport on March 30.

MMC for Roads and Transport, Clr Lindiwe Mnguni, attended the two-day indaba, which brought together stakeholders from across the transport sector to explore solutions for a more efficient and inclusive system.

The indaba was hosted under the theme Innovate, Inclusivity and Sustain – Moving Airport Public Transport Forward, with a focus on strengthening partnerships and enhancing commuter experiences.

The City noted that, as host of OR Tambo International Airport — Africa’s busiest airport and a key gateway to the continent — it plays a critical role in shaping the future of transport.

The municipality’s bus rapid transit system already connects to the airport precinct, providing commuters with a more coordinated and accessible travel option.

Mnguni welcomed the collaborative efforts among stakeholders, emphasising the need to prioritise safety, affordability and reliability in public transport.

“The city supports ongoing engagements aimed at delivering a public transport system that meets the needs of all commuters,” the City stated.

The municipality added that plans to extend its Harambee bus service will strengthen integration with other modes of transport, including the Gautrain, improving overall connectivity.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive relationships with the taxi industry as part of a broader, inclusive transport network.

The City said it remains focused on building a public transport system that is efficient, accessible and responsive to the needs of both residents and travellers.
