Six abused dogs rescued by Bedfordview SPCA

The Germiston Magistrate’s Court granted the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA a warrant to remove six abused dogs from a property after two formal warnings were ignored.

On June 11, the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA executed a warrant granted by the Germiston Magistrate’s Court and removed six dogs from a property in their jurisdiction.

According to Jacques Peacock of the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA management committee, the inspection followed a complaint about dogs being kept in small cages and subjected to abuse.

When the SPCA inspector first arrived, the alleged tenants refused to allow access.

The owner failed to respond to two formal warnings requesting them to contact the SPCA to allow access for an inspection, after which the warrant was obtained.

On the property, Peacock said dogs kept for what appeared to be breeding purposes were found in poor conditions. Four were confined inside the compartments of a dog trailer with no access to water.

“The following day, two individuals arrived at our shelter demanding the return of the dogs. They later returned with the property owner.

“They claimed the dogs had been in the care of a ‘trainer’ for ‘crate’ and ‘obedience’ training and maintained that the conditions our team encountered were acceptable,” Peacock reported.

He added that they also alleged that the SPCA had acted outside the Animals Protection Act, citing sections that do not exist in that legislation.

The situation deteriorated to the point where Mamba Strike Force Security had to remove the group from the premises. Peacock said their staff were threatened and harassed.

“Criminal charges will be laid against all individuals who held responsibility for the welfare of these dogs. We will provide updates as the matter progresses.”

Peacock further said the six dogs are now in a place of safety and receiving the care and attention they were denied.
